Make Broadband Access an Educational Equity Issue

With so much of the world's information moving online, students must now have access to the Internet to complete homework assignments and augment their learning outside of class. Even school websites themselves are not accessible to students and parents without broadband access. Lack of broadband access, therefore, creates inequities in educational opportunities.

Create a Business Case for Hard-To-Serve Areas—Broadband Enterpr

Broadband rollout is going well in areas where demand and market forces sufficiently incentivize private network companies, and federal actions must not devalue or weaken incentives for private investment. But there obviously remains the problem of areas where, for reasons of geography, population density, or other issues, a business case for deploying broadband is a challenge. At the same time the policy tool box ...more »

Community Empowerment

Of the $7.4 billion, being allocated by the U.S. government for broadband access from the Stimulus Fund, Washington State was recently awarded $84 million, http://www.ntia.doc.gov/press/2010/03012010_BTOP_WAannounce.html. The unfortunate aspect of this, and similar allocations, is that they really do nothing at the community level to address local end user communications or assist their local businesses where the ...more »

broadband mapping web services

Creation of broadband mapping databases is necessary but not sufficient. There is a need for publicly accessible web services beyond simple search interfaces. Federally supported contracts with selected state mapping service providers should provide for standard web services using a common broadband mapping schema.

BroadbandUSA Grants & Job Creation - Let's Keep Track of the Jobs Created as a REAL SCORECARD!

With ARRA and the Broadband grants opportunities now available, and the process to leverage broadband investments advancing consistently, I believe the timetable originally set for the grant & project timelines will be met. There were some challenges in applying for the first round so far (uploading PDF's overloaded so I had to mail in documents), but I was pleased to see the challenges were being met. I was especially ...more »

Broadband over Powere Lines

Please see this link for Broadband over Power Lines -- http://www.state.nj.us/rpa/BPLwhitepaper.pdf This is a White Paper I wrote for NJ State. It also shows countries where Broadband over power lines is in place and the corresponding success rates. The idea is to offer greater options to the users. Currently, where I live, I have only one option - Comcast Cable. It has virtual monopoly. I do not have Verizon in ...more »

Best Practices/Big Ideas

Broadband and the Internet are antithetical ideas like railroads vs driving

Stop confusing Broadband with The Internet so that we can get a connected infrastructure instead of billable paths. http://frankston.com/?N=BI. Speed easy but availability is far more important -- 24×7×X×Y×Z wired and wireless.

Worldwide Broadband for Video-capable Hand Held Computers / Economic Benefits to U.S. of Wiring the World

I hope one goal in this National Broadband Plan process is broadband video-capable hand held computers worldwide, so that One Laptop per Child countries, for example, may be able to access the web (and open teaching and learning opportunities, such as at the open World University & School wiki, - like Wikipedia with MIT Open Course Ware - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University). I hope the U.S. can integrate ...more »
