why is the U.S. behind on broadband speed of mere 10-15 mbps? we should be competing with Korea Japan and Frank with 50-100+ mbps! and at low costs!!!

Networking is something people DO to form their community.

We should think of the internet(s) as something that people and communities DO as a means to other ends. We should not think of the internet as a "service" that we "buy." I heard a brilliant quote: "The question is not how do ISPs recover their costs -- the question is why we keep insisting on funding our infrastructure by charging for services instead of recognizing that the infrastructure is not a profit center. ...more »

US lagging behind in Broadband Speeds

The United States is behind in the broadband market and has needed to step it up when it comes to speeds and prices. You can get 100Mbps fiber connections in Japan for the same price as what a 15Mbps connection costs here in the US. Freedom to do whatever with our connection

We pay for our services, and a lot, yet most companies disallow you to do numerous things with the service you purchased! My big complaint with that is they do not allow the use of servers, at all, no matter how little traffic the server would get.

 

If we are paying for XMb/s, aren't we entitled to use it however we please?

Download tests OOKLA and MLAB appear unequal

Running the OOKLA and MLAB tests? Better run both, and run them multiple times. OOKLA gives download ratings to me which are repeatably 350-400% "faster" than MLAB, with the series run in a short timeframe. Appears they are not equal. And the results are being recorded centrally for some sort of analysis?

FREEE BROADBAND W/O THE GOV'T

Most of these comments are good, real good, but I kinda get a little worried when the gov't decides to give a helping hand to a system. There should be free broadband internet for everybody regardless of income. It is getting so that people actually need the internet and have trouble getting it even when they are paying anywhere from $40 to $100 a month!!! Better Later than Never, But GREAT Idea!!!

Broadband.gov, what great idea for a site. BUT it doesn't go far enough to really take care of the Broadband issue. First the best step taken, was having speed tests by Ookla. They are becoming the new industry standard and since my ISP uses them, it makes it harder for them to dispute the results. Change deceptive "Mbps" to the industry standard "MBps".

Most people do not know the difference. The former is Megabits per second, the latter is Megabytes per second. 1Mbps is 8 times slower than 1MBps. For quite some time now, the byte has been the standard for measurement in computing. Court decision re: "Internet is only an information system"

Since the early 2000 years the courts have upheld the ruling that the Internet is an information system, not a video system. Comcast and others are pouring Cable video over the internet, and will ultimately utilize the internet for all cable programming....for a subscription fee.
